Universite de Montreal - Biomedical Engineering Institute
The laboratory of Prof. Xavier Banquy at Université de Montréal is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to investigate interaction forces between biomimetic surfaces at the nanoscale. This project moves beyond static descriptions to reveal how external fields reprogram force–distance laws and binding kinetics in real time.
Research tracks
Track 1 — Electro-stimulation in weak electrolytes: Apply AC electric fields to polarize interfaces and drive induced-charge electro-osmosis, reorganizing ion clouds faster than diffusion. Quantify time-dependent zeta potentials and Debye lengths to switch double-layer repulsion and steer ligand–receptor encounters on demand.
Track 2 — Acoustic actuation in nanogaps: Use high-frequency out-of-plane vibrations to generate squeeze-film pressures and acoustic streaming, modulating hydrodynamic drainage and confinement, and thus tuning the balance among dispersion, hydration, and electrostatic forces.
By coupling rapid field actuation with force spectroscopy and advanced imaging, the project will map how ion transport and micro-fluid dynamics couple to interfacial energetics, explaining field-responsive changes that remain hidden in equilibrium-centric models. The resulting insights will feed directly into technologies under development to enhance drug administration, penetration, and pharmacokinetics, and to dynamically control tissue–device interfaces.
This PhD offers rigorous training at the interface of physical chemistry, soft matter, and bioengineering, ideal for ambitious young scientists eager to turn fundamental discovery into real-world impact.
Funding of the project
Federal funding is confirmed (Canada Research Chair) for the whole duration of the PhD (4 years).
