Job Description

Position Overview

The School of Computing Science at Simon Fraser University (SFU) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.
We seek excellent applicants in AI, theory, systems, and interdisciplinary areas.
The School encourages applications from women and underrepresented groups in all areas of computing science.

Recently celebrating 50 years of computing science at SFU, the School has grown to become one of the top computer science departments in Canada as well as enjoying a strong international reputation. SFU is located in metro Vancouver, one of the most livable areas in North America.

Expectations of Successful Candidates

Successful candidates are expected to have strong research records and demonstrate commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and graduate student supervision; including the demonstration of creating inclusive classrooms and/or recognition of needs in support of a diverse student body.
The School will consider applications at the Assistant and Associate Professor rank. Please indicate the rank you are applying for, with the following expectations:

Assistant Professor Expectations

  • Excellent research achievements demonstrated by publications at top venues with the candidate being the main contributor
  • Strong reference letters
  • Broader impact of the research outcomes shown, for example, by:
    • research awards
    • citations
    • open-source tools used by peers
    • technology transfer to industry

Associate Professor Expectations

  • Outstanding research achievements demonstrated by sustained publications at top venues for several years
  • Strong reference letters from leaders in their area
  • Broader impact of research outcomes (awards, citations, open-source tools, technology transfer)
  • A strong research funding record
  • Visibility in their research community and leadership skills
  • Evidence of effective supervision of graduate students
  • High-quality teaching of graduate and undergraduate courses

Salary Information

Faculty salaries at SFU are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the SFU Faculty Association.

Assistant Professor Rank

A reasonable estimate of the salary range is:
$104,700 – $163,322 (subject to experience and inclusive of Market Differential).

Associate Professor Rank

Candidates with experience commensurate with higher rank may be considered.
A reasonable estimate of the base salary range is:
$130,142 – $185,584 (dependent on experience and inclusive of Market Differential).

Instructor Rank

PhD candidates with strong indication of imminent completion may be hired as Instructor and promoted after PhD completion.
Instructor salary estimate:
$98,340 – $128,340(inclusive of Market Differential).
